The Northern Rockhopper Penguin hops on rocks, hence its English name. Please note how they insert their claws into the rocks enabling them to move on very sloping surfaces.
The female lays two eggs where the first egg is much smaller than the second one. In the struggle for food the smallest chick will die of starvation within a couple of days. Often one of the eggs will fall out of the nest before hatching so it is a kind of safeguard to ensure having at least one young.
At Odense ZOO, we hand feed the penguins every day and the colour tags on their flippers
help us distinguish them from each other
