The Cape Teal lives in southern Africa. Like most teals from the south, it is difficult to differentiate between the male and female as they are both pale coloured. The beak may, however, be slightly pink, but only in adult teals.
During mating season, however, you can hear the difference between males and females. The male can make a high whistling sound which the female answers with a clear “quack”.
Cape Teals eat plants, amphibians and invertebrates, such as snails and spiders. Even though the Cape Teal belongs to the group of teals which find their food on the surface of the water, it can also dive.
